MARK CHAPTER 5

THE RESULTS OF MISSIONS

AIM: To show the pupils what missionary work does and the importance of it.

Introduction: Jesus was doing missionary work. His headquarters at this time was Capernaum and He was in the Galilean phase of His ministry. He was touring the area of Galilee, going out to the villages and towns as do missionaries today. In our lesson today, we see three results of mission work, not only of our Lord's work, but also what our missionaries are doing today.

I. PEOPLE ARE MADE NEW CREATURES

The Demoniac of Gadara was made a new man  II Corinthians 5:17 and Mark 5:1-20

The State of the Man: Vs. 2-5

Dwelled among the Dead, Demon possessed, naked, not in his right mind (15), despondent, depressed, nervous, and uncontrollable. Vs. 2-5.

He was a picture of unsaved people, people without Christ.

(Ephesians 2:1-3; II Timothy 1:7)

The Knowledge of the Man: Vs. 6-7

He knew who Jesus was when He met Him.

Jesus has Power over Demons: Vs. 8-14

Vs. 8 - Jesus had authority over the Demons and unclean spirits.

Vs. 9 - A Roman Legion contained 6,000 soldiers. The demons used the word to show how completely they possessed the man.

Vs. 10 - This was the Demons speaking.

Vs. 11-13 - Demons must live in a body. Note the violence that Demons cause.

The Changed Man: Vs. 15-20

Vs. 15 - The Demoniac after Jesus had healed him was sitting (calmed down) Isaiah 58:21; clothed (the further people get from the Bible the more naked they become); now he was in his right mind (No one is in their completely right mind without Christ). II Timothy 2:25. Unsaved oppose themselves; He wanted to be with Jesus. Vs. 18. Note: People that are saved want to live right and attend church. Go and tell - Vs. 19 & 20 - He went and published what the Lord had done for him and we should also. Mark 16:15.

II. THE INADEQUACY OF RELIGIONS AND OF SELF ARE MANIFESTED

A woman was healed of a Blood condition. Vs. 25-34

Her Problem was Her Blood

The blood of sinners is contaminated with sin. Ezekiel 16:6; Romans 5:12; Acts 17:26

Because of her blood she was considered unclean. Leviticus 15:19

None could help her, only Jesus. Vs. 27-29. John 14:6; Matthew 11:28

She had tried every possible way to become healed and she used all her means but to no avail. Vs.26. Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:8,9; Titus 3:5,6.

Note what Jesus did for Her:

He healed her. Vs. 29.

Virtue went out of Him to her. Vs. 30. Only Jesus can purify - Acts 15:9 & Isaiah 63:9

He gave her peace. Vs. 34 & Romans 5:1.

He did for her what no one else could do, in response to faith-Vs. 34; Hebrews 11:6; John 3:16

III. THE DEAD ARE RAISED. Vs. 22-24; 35-43

Jairus' Daughter was Dead - Vs. 35

Unsaved are spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:1

The Daughter of a Prominently Religious Man - Vs. 22,23

Being born in a Christian family or raised in the church is not enough. Ye must be born again. John  3:1-16.

Only Jesus can Raise from the Dead - Vs. 36-43; John 11:43 & Romans 6:11,13

CONCLUSION: The work that does the most good for people is mission work. Summarize the main headings of the lesson. It is better for people to have their spiritual needs met than for them to have their physical needs met. Our missionaries minister primarily to the spiritual needs of people.

Do you give regularly to Missions? Each of us should. Would you like to do mission work? You can right here at home. Acts 1:8. We should all be witnesses and God has promised to give us the power to do mission work. Plan to witness to someone each day.
