Read I Kings 17 for the purpose of getting Elijah in context...1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. 5 So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. 7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. (living by faith and in obedience isn't always easy.)
8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Hit Faith Promise and living off of the provision of God...17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? People soon forget don't they? 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth. What a Chapter..
People get Ugly in a crisis don't they...Read 1 Kings 18: (for the purpose of the church seeing what Elijah the man of God went through.. ) 1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. Things are usually happening as fast as we want them too are they? I've been in this Church 25 and half months.. do you realize he's at the 36 month mark and not a drop of rain in all that time..
2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria. (where were the Grove Boys?)
23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under : and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: (Sun up to Sun down and nothing... )
30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. Turn to I Kings 19; This is our text passage, and hopefully we've got it some in Context..
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. The world is full of the devil and they don't care what you do they are blinded by Satan, they will keep on coming..
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. He said God Kill me..5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. |
Now tonight, I believe we've got it somewhat in context... a man on the run for 3 years for delivering the message of God.. finally get the 'Show - Down' over with, he get the Victory, and the World and the Devil don't care, that seems to make them want to get them more...
He heads off into the wilderness and we read:
Why was this great Man of God is this kind of Shape?
God hasn't brought them on the scene.. There was a crowd that rallied on top of Carmel but that was the only group that seemed to really do much with and for Elijah...
B. Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
C. Numbers 11:14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
D. Leviticus 26:8 And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
B. OTHERS ARE ENCOURAGED BY YOUR FAITHFULNESS
C. YOU CAN NOT HAVE UNITY WITHOUT IT - Division means two visions.. how are we going to have one vision when we don't come to church and find out what the vision is:
D. LAYING OUT MAKES YOU FEEL ISOLATED - IT BOTHERS YOUR CONSCIENCE
WHEN I LEFT THE CHURCH IN KY. THEY VOTED TO REJECT MY RESIGNATION AND THEY HAD TWO PRAYER MEETINGS TO PRAY I'D CHANGE MY MIND.. I WAS EXTREMELY HONORED, AND IT MADE LEAVING ALL THE MORE DIFFICULT, BUT I KNEW WHAT THE LORD'S WILL WAS!
They said things like, "Preacher you can't leave us" ....I thought to myself, "Where were you on visitation? Where were you in Sunday School?"
It gets very tiring to have visitation week after week and have the same 4 on Thursday and the same 8 or 10 on Saturday. I've got news for some of you.. You are without excuse! The real problem is your heart is cold because you don't read your bible and pray... but you are going to answer for the discouragement you cause your brethren.. If you teach a SS class or if you are a deacon, do you realize that you are teaching people to be unfaithful! That is wicked and wrong!
Let me say this as well.... We usually not as alone as we think we are...
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
B. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The Christian life will get you tired sometimes and in those moments of fatigue you had better let God rest you...
B. 2 Thessalonians 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
C. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
