"YOU GOT WHAT YOU WANTED
AND LOST EVERYTHING…"
1 Samuel 8:6thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
GOD GAVE THEM A KING… HE WAS A SIGHT TO SEE.. HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST… YET THE MAN WAS CARNAL… HE WAS FLESHLY… EVENTUALLY HE WAS GONE… DAVID BECOMES KING… THEN SOLOMON.. THEN REHABOAM… (REMEMBER GOD HAS SERVED AS THEIR KING, AND AS KING OVER A PEOPLE HE UNDERTOOK THE RESPONSIBILITIES) GOD WARNED THEM BEFORE THEY TOOK A KING WHAT WOULD HAPPEN..
NOTICE WHAT HAPPENS…
I KINGS 12: 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
CAN YOU SEE THIS MORNING WHAT HAPPENED TO ISRAEL.. THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED AND THEY LOST EVERYTHING…
1. THEY WANTED A GREAT KING.. (ONE LIKE THE OTHER NATIONS) GOT LET THEM HAVE IT… AND THEY LOST THE PRIVELEDGE OF HAVING GOD AS THEIR KING..
2. THEY WANTED THE PRESTIGE OF THE OTHER NATIONS… BUT IT COST THEM THE PRESTIGE OF HEAVEN..
3. THEY WANTED THE PRIDE OF HAVING A GREAT PALACE.. BUT THEY DIDN'T REALIZE THAT IT WOULD COST THEM ALL THEIR TREASURES AND THEIR SONS AND DAUGHTERS..
4. THEY WANTED TO BE A GREAT NATION AMONG THE NATIONS AND IN THEIR WAY OF THINKING THE WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS WAS TO GET A GREAT KING.. BUT THEIR KING CAUSED A WAR THAT WEAKENED THEIR NATION AND EVENTAULLY LEAD TO IT'S DECLINE AND FALL….
THIS MORNING I WANT TO LOOK AT THIS SUBJECT:
"WHEN GOD GIVES YOU WHAT YOU WANT
BUT IT COST'S YOU EVERYTHING!"
I.) ADAM AND EVE… PERSONAL AUTONOMY
GEN 3: 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat
THEY WANTED TO BE LIKE GOD, THEY WANTED TO KNOW GOOD AND EVIL, THEY WANTED TO BE WISE…. GOD ALLOWED IT… HE DIDN'T SEND A LIGHTNING BOLT TO HIT THEM BEFORE THE FRUIT COULD BE EATEN.. WHAT HAPPENED? THEY WERE EVICTED FROM THE GARDEN.. THEY BEGAN TO DIE AND THEY BROUGHT A CURSE ON ALL OF MANKIND.
THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED AND LOST EVERYTHING.
1. ROM 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
2. Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
IF THEY HAD OF LISTENED TO GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS THEY WOULD HAVE LIVED FOREVER, BUT THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED.. AND GOD ALLOWED IT. NOW TODAY MANKIND IS FOREVER DYING..
THERE IS A MINDSET THAT SAYS…. GOD IS TRYING TO KEEP ME FROM SOMETHING GOOD. HE IS TRYING TO KEEP ME FROM FUN… THE DEVIL AUTHORED IT… AND WE TAKE IT HOOK LINE AND SINKER…. WE GO ABOUT TO GET WHAT WE WANT.. AND SOMEHOW WE THINK THAT IF GOD DOESN'T STOP US IT CAN'T BE THAT BAD.
DON'T LINE UP WITH THIS, "I'M NOT CONVICTED ABOUT IT.." IF GOD SAYS NO TO SOMETHING IN HIS WORD AND YOU CAN DO IT AND NOT FEEL GUILTY, OR GET AWAY WITH IT… I'D WONDER TWO THINGS?
1. AM I SAVED?
2. WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN DOWN THE ROAD!
GO AHEAD AND KEEP A HABIT, A PET SIN.. YOUR SPOUSE, KIDS, YOUR PREACHER AND MOM AND DAD ALL SAY IT IS WRONG… SAY, "I'M NOT CONVICTED".. GOD WILL LET YOU HAVE WHAT YOU WANT… BUT IT MAY COST YOU EVERYTHING..
II.) JACOB.. POSSESSIONS
GEN. 27:5 Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
6 ¶ And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.
HE WANTED THE FAMILY BIRTHRIGHT AND BLESSING… BUT IT COST HIM HIS FAMILY…
SEPERATED FROM DAD AND MOM AND BROTHER, AND HOME… FEAR ALL THE DAYS OF HIS LIFE.. AND THEN NOTICE HIS BOYS… THEY PICK UP ON HIS WAYS, BUT I SUBMIT THAT HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED AND LOST EVERYTHING..
AMERICA AND OUR CHURCHES HAVE ROLLS FULL OF NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED A BIRTHRIGHT AND A BLESSING… AND THEY WERE WILLING TO SELL OUT THEIR CHARACTER AND DO WHATEVER IT TOOK AND KNOCK WHOEVER DOWN ALL THAT WAS NECESSARY TO GET WHAT THEY WANTED AND IN SO DOING THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED AND WHEN THEY GOT IT.. IT COST THEM EVERYTHING..
YOU KNOW WHAT IS SO SAD ABOUT JACOB… HE WAS HELPED IN HIS SCHEMES BY HIS MOM: SHE WAS PART OF HIS SIN… SHE HELPED..
Genesis 25:28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. MOM, SHE HELPED HER SON GET WHAT SHE AND HER SON WANTED, BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW IT COST HER EVERYTHING… SEARCH THE SCRIPTURE. SHE NEVER SEE'S JACOB AGAIN AFTER HE LEAVES… OH, IT COST HER.
APPLICATION:
TODAY WE'VE GOT MOMS WHO'D RATHER HAVE CHILDREN FIT IN THE WORLD.. GET TO GO TO THE DANCES, BE POPULAR, ETC. ETC.. THAN KNOW GOD!! AND MY FRIEND THEY MAY GET WHAT THEY WANT AND FIND OUT IT COST THEM EVERYTHING!
IT IS SAD WHEN A PARENT TAKES IT'S CHILD OUT OF A GOOD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SO THEY CAN BE A CHEERLEADER AND WEAR THEIR MINI SKIRT…
IT IS SAD WHEN A MOM AND DAD LEAD THEIR KIDS AWAY FROM A GOOD CHRISTIAN COLLEGE BECAUSE IT MIGHT HURT THEIR CHILD'S INCOME POTENTIAL.. GOD HELP US.
III.) DAVID…. PLEASURE
2KINGS 11:2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
ON THE ROOF TOP ONE NIGHT, HE SAW A WOMAN NAMED BATHSHEBA, SHE WAS BATHING… HE LOOKED, HE LOOKED AGAIN, HE LUSTED, AND LUST WHEN IT HATH CONCIEVED BRINGETH FORTH SIN AND SIN WHEN IT IS FINISHED BRINGETH FORTH DEATH. HE SENT HIS SERVANTS TO GET THAT BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MARRIED LADY. GOD DIDN'T STOP HIM. HE LET HIM HAVE WHAT HE WANTED. BUT IT COST HIM EVERYTHING.
AMAZING… AFTER COMITTING ADULTRY.. THEY HAD THE NERVE TO OBSERVE SOME CEREMONIAL LAW….
ALL ACROSS AMERICA TODAY FATHERS WOKE UP WITHOUT THEIR CHILDREN… WHY? BECAUSE THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED AND LOST EVERYTHING…. WE ARE LIVING IN AN HOUR OF INFIDELITY. IN OUR COUNTRY WHEN A MAN CHEATS ON HIS WIFE IT ISN'T ACCEPTABLE WITH GOD BUT IT SEEMS TO BE WITH SOCIETY. BUT WHERE IS SOCIETY WHEN YOUR LONELY…
PROV. 6:32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
Psalms 38:6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.
2 Samuel 12:10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
NEXT TIME YOU ARE CONSIDERING SOME FORM OF IMORALITY, REALIZE THAT YOU MAY GET WHAT YOU WANT AND FIND OUT YOU LOST EVERYTHING!~!
IV.) RICH MAN… PRIORITIES
Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
HE WANTED TO FAIR SUMPTUOUSLY EVERYDAY AND FORGET GOD.. GOD LET HIM BUT EVENTUALLY IT COST HIM EVERYTHING…. THIS MORNING HE'S IN HELL.
HE WANTED TO LIVE THE WAY HE WANTED TO LIVE…. HE WANTED A BIG HOUSE.. HE WANTED NEW CARS… BUT HE LEFT NO TIME FOR GOD… MY FRIEND HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED BUT IT COST HIM EVERYTHING.
V.) JESUS… PAIN
Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
WHERE WOULD WE BE IF HE HAD DONE HIS WILL….
