Preparation for Famine

Preacher Bryan Burr

Amos 8:11-13

Old fashion day service; May 2000 El Bethel Baptist

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

The days of Amos were much like our days. There was prosperity in the land. In fact, Israel was living in luxury. Plenty of money, plenty of time, no wars, "Life was Good." The people thought they had everything they needed. King Jeroboam II was in charge. He had his own little preacher, Amaziah, in his pocket, to tell him he was doing fine. He was a proper little preacher, he went to prophet school, got his degree in, "How to win friends and influence people.

I can see him now, coming to the pulpit, strictly by the bulletin. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, if you don't mind this morning let us turn in our copies of better homes and gardens, to page 55." Of course it was better homes, it couldn't have been ,the Word of God.

"When all of a sudden!!" From out side the window comes, "Woe to them that are at ease in Zion." "God will send judgement upon this wicked nation." I love a man of God,that tells it like it is. Amos didn't come to make friends and influence people. He came to give them the Word of God. He came to tell them to get right or suffer the consquences of their sins. " There's a famine coming boys, if you don't get it right. Not a physical famine, but a spiritual famine." They didn't listen, just like many today, are not going to listen. But it came just like God's man said it would. For four hundred year Israel didn't hear a word, Not one word from God. I can't imagine one day without the Word of God. Can you imagine four hundred years. I'll tell you this much, though, I believe that America is in the mist of a famine. Why? Because we as a nation have forgotten God. Hosea chapter 4:6 says that Israel did that and it put them in a dangers place. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." I don't want God to forget me or my children. So i began to look for ways to prepare for a famine. I found two basic things common with famines; One: they were either caused by nature; or Two: they were the judgement of God. The second could be avoided if the people would stay out of Sin. The other had to be suffered. And generally shows what we're made of. The famine in Abraham's day showed his weakness in faith, which in return showed him a need in his life. Sometimes we must be tested to see our needs. But how do we survive a famine? By these steps.

I. Heed the Sign!

A. Amos cried out, " It's coming a day when no more word will come. God is going to do what the stiffnecked people of Israel thought they wanted him to do. "He's going to leave them alone!" And I'm telling you that there's coming a day when you won't have to worry about another, Christian knocking on the door, Another gospel tract on your car, Another mother's tear for you, Another Daddy's sermon on getting right with God, Another wives, "Honey, Will you go to church with me." Because one day soon God is going to say, " IT IS ENOUGH !" And we won't be here. No more warnings!! Just Hell and the Wrath of God to face from then on.

B. Thank God for a Man of God that is willing to warn of pending danger. So many men today are scared of the crowd, their retirement, or what ever else it is that shuts their mouths ( SIN, Maybe!) God help us to sound that gospel trumpet in our day like dying men to a dying world, because we are.

C. Cry Aloud Preacher! Cry Aloud. There's a Famine coming! You can't here the Word of God if their not using the Word of God! The King James 1611 is THE WORD OF GOD!!! Accept no substitutes! I don't care what Chuck Swindle, or Charles Stanley tell you. Their not God! And He said that His word was preserved from this generation forever. If God, was the author of more than on English speaking Bible than he would be the author of confusion. And that would make Him a Liar. And MY God is No Liar!!! The second thing you should do to prepare for famine is :

II. Stock Pile Supplies.

A. When they started crying about Y2K people started to stock up. When a Man of God stands and tells you there's dark days ahead. You better learn as much of that word of God as you can! Because you may not be able to latter. How come you don't stock up. Is not your spiritual life as important as your physical life.

B. When he says you better enjoy the blessings of God, and assembly yourselves together while you can. Why do you lay out of the House of God.

C. The Bible says to pray without ceasing. It doesn't say to cease praying. I know most of us have that mixed up so I just wanted to clear that up.

III. Look For Sanctuary.

A. When the famine was sore in the land the people in the Bible looked for help from a greater source than themselves. Abraham did in Gen. 12:10; Isaac did Gen. 26:1; Jacob did Gen.42:1

B. When the Famine gets sore in your life, take refuge. Run to the house of God. Run to ElBethel, to the God of the House of God. He will feed you ,shelter you, and protect you

C. Aren't you glad that God has given you an Oasis in the Desert. Aren't you glad when it gets tough and you fill like you are starving to death in the middle of the week, God parks you in front of a watering hole. And says here have a cool drink of water . From the Water of Life.

Amen....
